The Inter-School Speech Contest of SKHTST Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program (TYLP) took place on 6 July, 2024 at our Lecture Theatre. There were two events: The Junior Division Prepared Speech and the Senior Division Prepared Speech, both followed by an impromptu question-answer session for each speaker.
The themes of the contest were “True happiness comes from helping others” and “Not to be served but to serve” for the junior and the senior divisions respectively, aligning with our school’s Major Concerns.
For the Junior Division (Primary 5 to Form 1), there were five contestants from five different schools. They were Dr. Catherine F. Woo Memorial School, Ma On Shan Ling Liang Primary School, SKH Ma On Shan Holy Spirit Primary School, Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School and our school.
In the Senior Division (Form 2 to Form 5), four different schools, represented by two students each, participated in the contest. They were SKH Lam Kau Mow Secondary School, Pentecostal Lam Hon Kwong School, Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School and our school.
We were greatly honoured to have six judges, namely, Mr. PC CHAN, Ms. Jessica LEE, Mr. Pong LEUNG, Ms. Joy PAMNANI, Ms. Kitty WONG and Mr. Talis WONG adjudicating the contest.
Our principal Mr. Jaxon WANG thanked all judges for their adjudication and most valuable written comments given to all contestants. To add spice to the contest, the audience members were invited to vote for The Most Interesting Speaker out of the 13 contestants on their mobile device. Five students in the audience also volunteered to take part in the Table Topics Session giving an impromptu speech.
Our TYLP, in its fourth year of establishment, was greatly encouraged by the 70 attendees at the Inter-School Speech Contest composed of teachers, parents and students from participating schools as well as our students, English teachers and TYLP members. Attending our Contest was also Ms. Alice TSE, President of Achievers Toastmasters.

The Inter-School Speech Contest is the culmination of our eight TYLP meetings from February to May 2024. The meetings were attended by 48 members comprising Primary 5 to 6 students, 20 junior form students (Forms 1 to 3) and 18 senior students (Forms 4 to 5) from four primary schools and two secondary schools, ours included. As a learning community, students volunteered for different roles such as MCs, speakers of prepared or impromptu speeches, evaluators, secretaries of evaluators and facilitators (timers and ah-counters).
Adding to the excitement in each meeting was the Voting for the Best Speakers by all members. Most inspiring were also the workshops given by different Toastmasters International members and their General Evaluation. Our deepest gratitude goes to Mr. Chih AU, Mr. PC CHAN, Ms. Ivy CHEUNG, Ms. Jessica LEE, Ms. Joy PAMNANI, Ms. Kitty WONG and Mr. Talis WONG for devoting their Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings to have meetings with us.
Special thanks also go to our retired former Vice Principal Mrs. Anne TAM, four current teachers Mr. LAM Ka Chun (Chief Advisor), Ms. HAI Wan Man, Ms. LAM Kit Shan and Mr. Nathan MARTIN, and three alumni Ms. Philana CHAN, Ms. Bonnie WONG and Ms. Constance WONG serving as Workshop speakers and Language Masters in the meetings.
